Today Microsoft announced the availability of Windows PowerShell RC2.
The command line shell and scripting language that helps IT Professionals achieve greater productivity and control of system administration. Using a new admin-focused scripting language and consistent syntax and utilities, Windows PowerShell accelerates automation.  Windows PowerShell is easy to adopt, learn, and use, because it works with existing IT infrastructure and scripting tools.

  • Direct ADSI support to allow IT Pros to more easily administer Active Directory
  • Improved support for Windows Management Instrumentation through ability to change WMI properties via methods
  • Additional logical operators (XOR and binary XOR) that make it easier to write sophisticated scripts
  • Improved help content and help functionality including new views that make it easier to find the right information.

Warm Up Your SharePoint Servers

Found some cool scripts, that can “warm up” your SharePoint Servers, so first page hit doesn’t seem as slow as it usually does.

Ever thought things on ASP.NET were a bit slow the first time accessing them?  Many of you are aware that ASP.NET from a web admin perspective know that things have to recompile and things just aren’t as fast the first time.  In fact some times things are incredibly slow the first time and are incredibly slow.  Ever had users say, for some odd reason some times when I hit my SharePoint site it takes 30 seconds to load, then after a refresh it goes sub second, even clearing their cache the page is fast.  That’s because it’s not a user issue, its simply compiling, caching, etc… on the server after an IISReset or app pool reset or worker process cycle.

If you’re doing demos of an ASP.NET app such as WSS or SPS or Office SharePoint Server 2007, or you simply want your home page to load faster after an IISReset so it’s not your users hitting the page for the first time, you may be *very* interested in this post.

Joel Oleson posted them on his blog: SharePoint Land – Warm Up your SharePoint Servers.

SharePoint 2003 vs 2007 comparison

Mart Muller has done a nice post about a comparison document on SharePoint 2003 vs 2007 from Microsoft.

Via Steve Caravajal and Shane, I ran into a great Excel sheet with a very detailed comparison between SharePoint 2003 and 2007 features:

  • Windows SharePoint Services v3
  • SharePoint Portal Server 2003
  • Office SharePoint 2007 for Search
  • Office Forms Server 2007
  • Office SharePoint Server 2007 Standard CAL – MOSS Standard
  • Office SharePoint Server 2007 Enterprise CAL or for Internet Site

Office 2007 Beta 2 Technical Refresh

Microsoft has released a Technical Refresh of Office 2007 Beta 2.
Besides some (hopefully) useful updates, it also now supports Vista RC1
The update should be located here according to the Office Preview site and the now separate download for “Save as PDF / XPS” can be found here, but if you want the Office 2007 System TR you need to look here. Notice the following warning before installing

IMPORTANT: Please read the update documentation, referenced in the “To install this download” section on this page, BEFORE applying this Beta 2 Technical Refresh update. The documents list several steps that you must complete prior to installation to ensure a successful update. This is NOT a single click update.

SharePoint Portals

Microsoft has annonced a “One Place to Go For SharePoint IT Pros” at TechNet. Nice to have one or two entry point for SharePoint resources from Microsoft.

I’m happy to announce the TechNet SharePoint Products & Technologies Tech Centers.

Longhorn Server – Aug 2006 CTP Available

Great news about Longhorn Server, a new version (August 2006 Community Technology Preview (CTP) – Build 5600) has been released, it’s available as download for MSDN and TechNet.

Hot on the heels of Windows Vista RC1, we have now released the August 2006 Community Technology Preview (CTP)of Windows Server “Longhorn”. It’s available for MSDN and TechNet subscribers to download.

Marked as Build 5560, the August 2006 CTP is an update to Windows Server “Longhorn” Beta 2. You won’t find many additional features over Beta 2, but there are big gains in performance and reliability as we’ve been able to bake in all the core OS improvements that were happening simultaneously in Windows Vista [as well as fix a bunch of our own bugs ;-) ].
